Audiobook-style recordings of Caesar's Commentaries on the Gallic Wars

In Linney's Latin Class, our textbook is called The First Year of Latin. The main goal of the textbook is to teach Latin grammar while at the same time preparing the student to read a work of Latin literature that is very commonly studied by students of Latin: Julius Caesar's Commentaries on the Gallic Wars. In Latin, the title of the book is Commentarii de Bello Gallico.

So, knowing something about the plot of the Commentaries on the Gallic Wars will be of great benefit to any student enrolled in Linney's Latin Class. I know that many of you are busy adults who like to study Latin in your spare time. Therefore, I have prepared these audiobook-style recordings of the Commentaries on the Gallic Wars. I personally have enjoyed listening to these recordings on my MP3 player, and I think you will enjoy them as well. Or, you could watch reruns of Desperate Housewives.

You'll get a lot more out of these recordings if you read a little about Julius Caesar's life and political ambitions. Also, knowing a little general history of Rome would be beneficial, too. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, familiarizing yourself with the geography of Gaul will be of great help as you listen to these recordings. On the links page, I have provided links to helpful Wikipedia articles on all of those subjects--and they have some decent maps that you can consult.

I hope you like a British accent, because these were recorded by my Aunt Emma from England.

Book 1

Much of Book I centers around a group of people known as the Helvetii. The Helvetii live in what would today be called Switzerland. Feeling a bit limited by the mountains and rivers that surround them, they cook up a scheme to leave their homeland behind and go west into other parts of Gaul. This causes a lot of problems for the surrounding tribes, and for Caesar, who is supreme commander of the Roman legions in Gaul. Not only is Caesar the wrong person to mess with, but he's got a personal grudge against the Helvetii for something they did years before. Things could get nasty between Caesar and the Helvetii.
